Check my hospital bill
Every hospital must publish its prices. This tool turns that around: enter the lines from your itemized bill and see each charge next to the prices hospitals actually publish for the same code - the hospital's own list, cash and typical insurance prices where we hold its full price list (195 hospitals, 978,187 published charges), the median prices across all hospitals that publish the code (40,577 billing codes), and the Medicare physician rate for your area.
1. Your hospital (optional, recommended)
2. Where the care happened (for the Medicare comparison)
3. Your bill lines
| Code | Type | Qty | Amount billed (line total) |
|---|
Codes are the CPT, HCPCS or DRG numbers printed on an itemized bill. If your bill only shows a total, call the billing department and ask for the itemized bill with codes - you are entitled to it.
Paste lines instead (from a patient portal or spreadsheet)
The share link encodes your bill lines and hospital in the link itself, in your browser - it is never sent to or stored on our servers. Anyone with the link can see those lines; it never includes your name or account details.
How to read the results
- Hospital's list / cash / typical prices - from that hospital's own machine-readable price file. Cash is its published self-pay discount price; typical is the median of the negotiated rates in its file.
- Median typical, all hospitals - the median typical insurance price across every hospital whose file we have extracted for that code.
- Medicare physician rate - the CY2026 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule rate for the locality. Hospital facility fees are paid under a different Medicare schedule, so treat this as a scale benchmark, not what Medicare would pay in total.
- Flags - a line billed above the hospital's own published list price, a quantity above the CMS Medically Unlikely Edit for the code, a possible duplicate, a charge more than twice the typical published price, or a code that CMS's NCCI edits bundle into another code on the same bill. A flag is a reason to ask a question, not proof of an error.
- Typical in your state - when you pick a hospital, this column shows the median typical insurance price among hospitals in that hospital's state that publish the code, for a local comparison next to the national median.
This tool is an educational comparison against published prices and CMS data. It is not medical, legal or financial advice. If you are insured, what you owe is set by your plan's negotiated rate and your deductible, not by the billed amount; the typical insurance price is the closest public proxy. Published files may have been updated by the hospital since we collected them - the file date is shown when a hospital is selected. In an emergency, call 911.
